Updated: Jul 30, 2023

Speech and Yoga Connection Wellness Offerings

Peak Speech Therapy offers yoga and meditation services intended for adults with brain injury and neurological diagnoses to improve upon their cognitive-communication challenges, increase connection and shared experiences within the community, and increase self acceptance of cognitive-communication challenges through class themes focused on creative problem solving, awareness, self compassion, and resilience.

How can yoga improve cognition and communication?

We know cognition and language support each other. One cannot formulate language, follow a conversation, or answer a question without using some form of cognitive skill or a multitude of cognitive skills such as attention, memory, or mental flexibility. There is research that shows changes in the structures and functions of the brain following yoga and meditation which can impact cognitive skills including positive benefits in attention, focus, working memory, mental fatigue, and stress.

Yoga and meditation following brain injury has positive benefits in the following areas:

-attention

-thickness of the prefrontal cortex which is responsible for focus and decision making

-working memory

-reduction in mental fatigue

-reduction in stress by shrinking the amygdala (which is responsible for fear and anxiety)

“As a speech language pathologist, I see many barriers to those meeting their communication goals including one’s ability to accept the changes within their brain and body, negative self talk, trauma, stagnation with movement, and fear. My hope is that you step off the mat feeling calm, fearless, and balanced.”

Holly completed her 200 hour Vinyasa Flow training with Yoga Farm Ithaca and an additional Yoga and Meditation for Brain Injury training through Yoga International.
